BRAIN-BOOSTING HERBS
My favourite herbs for focus, memory & overall cognitive function:
Bacopa:
Also known as ‘Brahmi’ has a number of incredible brain-boosting properties. It has been shown to enhance learning, concentration, and improve information processing. It also helps with stress management, reduces anxiety and is in antioxidants - protecting brain cells from oxidative stress. It’s no surprise that this is one of my favourite herbs for brain function!
Ginkgo Biloba:
An incredible herb to use alongside Bacopa, as they have synergistic effects. Gingko has been shown to boost cognitive function, memory and concentration - mainly through its ability to boost blood flow to the brain. It has also been shown to reduce short-term memory loss/brain fog and support early stage dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Ginseng:
There are multiple types of Ginseng, but all have been shown to positively impact mental alertness, focus, and mood - mainly through their energy-boosting properties.
Rhodiola:
An amazing adaptogenic herb that has been shown to support both physical & mental performance under stress. It has also been shown to reduce fatigue, brain fog, and improve mood.
Rosemary:
An easily-accessible herb that can be used in so many different ways. Studies have shown that the inhalation of rosemary extract can support short-term cognitive function & memory. Rosemary essential oil is a great inclusion in your diffuser, or you could even have sprigs of rosemary at your desk (or in your car for focus when driving - I love doing this for long car trips!).
Saffron:
Finishing on the QUEEN of mood-balancing! Saffron has been shown to have serotonin-enhancing properties, with multiple studies finding that it can be as effective as prescription medication in the management of Depression & Alzheimer’s Disease. Acutely, saffron can boost mood, enhance memory, and support overall cognitive health.
These herbs can be consumed as a tea, in cooking, as a supplement, or in a therapeutic dose as a herbal tincture (my personal favourite).
